20/09/2024 - According to an article published by Le Journal de Montréal, over $2.8 million in fines have been handed out to property owners in Quebec who failed to register their short-term rentals in compliance with new regulations introduced in September 2023. Revenu Québec has already issued at least 763 fines, primarily for failing to display a valid registration number obtained from the Corporation de l’industrie touristique du Québec (CITQ).

One notable case involved a property owner whose listing was taken down for not displaying the required registration number. She contested her fine in court but was ordered to pay more than $3,750, including legal fees. These stricter regulations were put in place following a tragic fire in an illegal Airbnb in Old Montreal that claimed the lives of seven people.
Fines range from $2,500 to $25,000, with even harsher penalties for repeat offenders. The government can also impose fines of up to $100,000 on digital platforms like Airbnb and WeChalet for allowing illegal listings to be posted.
